Buying Local

Whenever possible, we source our produce from local farms and suppliers to offer the freshest fruits and vegetables possible. We’ve done this for decades, building long-term relationships with farmers, supporting local economies and reducing the environmental impact of food transportation.  By eating in season, you too can support local farmers while enjoying the flavors of your local growing region.

SimpleNutrition

To help you make informed food choices during your grocery shopping trip, look no further than our SimpleNutrition tags right on the shelf. These green tags identify up to two key nutrition and ingredient benefits for a given product, so you get helpful nutrition information at a glance as you move through our aisles. The program was developed in partnership with registered dietitians and food labeling experts. Information on the tags is based on the latest published health guidelines from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), the Institute of Medicine (IOM), and other authoritative nutrition science organizations. SimpleNutrition is not a replacement for the nutrition facts panel found on food and beverage packages. It does, however, provide a quick snapshot of product nutrition and ingredient benefits to help you find the best match for your needs. We have also created SimpleNutrition online, an additional resource for food, nutrition and health information. We plan to expand the program to include a personalized online nutrition tool to help shoppers find healthier alternatives to the foods they currently purchase.

Animal Welfare

Treating animals humanely is a top priority for Safeway, and as such we are an industry leader in animal welfare. As part of this commitment, we have taken multiple steps to ensure animals are treated with the best care from farm to market, including promoting humane practices such as gestation stall-free housing for pork and cage-free eggs. Safeway has partnered with independent animal welfare experts to create an Animal Welfare Council. Joining us are a number of animal welfare scientists from top universities, including Dr. Temple Grandin from Colorado State University. The Council provides guidance and recommendations on matters relating to the humane treatment of animals in the food production system.

Supplier Diversity

Our Supplier Diversity Program encourages certified businesses owned by minorities, women, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals (LGBT), and service-disabled veterans to present their goods or services to Safeway for consideration. The program's mission is to promote supplier participation reflective of the diverse communities in which we do business, while encouraging economic development. Potential suppliers are guided through our evaluation and presentation processes by a designated diversity representative and the appropriate category decision-maker. Many of these entrepreneurs, whose products or services have been accepted at Safeway, have significantly expanded their businesses through our vast distribution network as a neighborhood grocery store in communities across the country.
