Volunteerism
Giving Back to Local Communities
Our employees lead busy and active lives, but that hasn’t stopped thousands of them from giving collectively more than 1 million hours of their time and energy to help create more vibrant communities where we live and work.
In addition to our employees’ individual efforts, Safeway organizes company-sponsored volunteer activities. Many of these activities are also open to the general public, and we invite you to participate. Some of the activities we have supported include:
- Staffing the phone banks at the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) telecast
- Working with Rebuilding Together to make homes and community centers more accessible to people with disabilities
- Partnering with the Special Olympics to provide volunteers at their annual games across the country
- Participating in several fundraiser walks, including the AIDS Walk, the Bonnie J Addario Lung Cancer Walk, the California Transplant Donor Network Walk and Safeway’s Father’s Day Walk for Prostate Cancer

Making Our Communities Healthier and Stronger
Since supporting our local communities is a top priority, we created a Safeway Volunteer Website that links employees with nonprofits and other organizations to help match personal interests with needs within our local communities. More than 80,000 organizations are listed and in 2011, our employees logged more than 1 million volunteer hours.
What's New
Safeway supports our local heroes. We exceeded our 2012 goal for hiring military veterans. Learn more about how we give back to those who give so much.
