Hunger Relief
Taking a Stand Against Hunger
Supporting local hunger relief programs is a natural fit for us, and we are proud to be one of the largest contributors to food banks and feeding programs in the communities we serve.
In 2011, the generosity of your donations combined with our employees’ contributions allowed us to donate more than $116.46 million in food products to hunger relief programs. In addition, many of our divisions contribute through their own signature programs to help fight hunger in their communities.
Safeway Spotlight: Chicago Partnerships Expand Hunger Awareness
Like all of our stores, Dominick’s stores in Chicago have been actively working to relieve hunger in their communities. They are regular contributors to the Greater Chicago Food Depository and the Northern Illinois Food Bank (NIFB). Over 1.2 million meals can be provided by the Greater Chicago Food Depository and the Northern Illinois Food Bank with the money and food donations that were made in our Dominick’s stores in 2011 and during the 2011 Holiday Food Drive. In addition to food contributions, the stores contributed $50,000 from employee donations toward a new state-of-the-art facility for the NIFB in 2011, which named a wing of the building in honor of our stores.
Our Dominick’s stores also engage in unique activities to encourage involvement in hunger relief efforts among their employees and customers including:
- A partnership with the Chicago White Sox where the players’ wives collect food and monetary donations at the doors of the US Cellular Field before and during a designated game
- An annual holiday food drive in partnership with Chicago Channel 7 to increase awareness
- A donation of all unsold, leftover food from the Taste of Chicago food festival
- Teambuilding volunteer days for employees at local food banks
