We encourage and support employee efforts to help hunger relief organizations in the communities where they live and work. Learn how you can support hunger relief at your local Safeway store.
Our employees actively contribute to The Safeway Foundation, which enables us to provide generous donations to many organizations. Employee contributions are managed through our Employee Foundation Giving Committees. These committees are composed of employees within each of our company’s geographical divisions. The committees award grants to non-profit organizations that will have the most impact in their communities and whose missions are aligned with The Safeway Foundation’s four areas of giving: hunger relief, education, health and human services and people with disabilities. In this way, Safeway employees are directly involved in the philanthropic activities at Safeway and contribute to making their communities better places to live.
Safeway continues to be among the first corporate responders when disasters strike our communities. During the past decade, we have raised money for several major humanitarian outreach efforts, including the September 11th terrorist attacks, the 2005 Southeast Asia tsunami disaster and Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. In 2010, we raised $2.6 million for the Haiti Earthquake Disaster Relief campaign. Our combined disaster relief fundraising efforts total more than $11 million for medical aid, food, shelter and relocation. In addition, we frequently donate supplies and funds to first responders and outreach agencies.
