A Message From Our CEO
Dear Safeway Stakeholder:
Making a real, positive difference in the neighborhoods we serve is at the Heart of Safeway. We sum up our commitment to you, our customers, employees and stakeholders, in a simple way: “Creating better lives, vibrant neighborhoods, and a healthier planet.”
Our customers told us they value the things we do that directly affect them in their homes, neighborhoods and daily lives. That’s why for us, corporate social responsibility starts at a personal level.
We’ve been in business for nearly 100 years and have stores throughout North America. But it’s the personal experience you have shopping in your neighborhood Safeway store, the local farmers whose produce we sell, the community food banks we donate to and the energy and water we save in your community that have the greatest impact on a daily basis.
And while our impact is certainly felt locally, we take our responsibility as a large company seriously. We know our choices can make a genuine difference beyond the walls of our stores – and so can the choices we bring to you in our stores.
When visiting our seafood counter, many of you will appreciate that Greenpeace USA ranked Safeway as the top grocer on its Supermarket Seafood Sustainability list for the second consecutive year. Through our eScrip partnership, we've donated over $250 million to the local schools and education programs nationwide that you choose to support. And with your generous donations at checkout and our corporate pledges, we’ve raised more than $184 million for a cure for cancer, a disease that affects so many families.
At Safeway, we believe that health and wellness for people and the planet go hand in hand. Our employees have access to health professionals and programs that help them lead healthier lives. On our store shelves, you’ll find more healthy choices within reach as we grow our selection of organic offerings, natural foods and earth-friendlier household items. And we’re working to create cleaner, healthier communities through zero-waste commitments at many of our manufacturing plants and renewable energy projects that help power a number of our stores and offices.
We appreciate the vital role you’ve played in our sustainability journey, and we look forward to the great things we can accomplish in the future. Let’s make our communities as vibrant and healthy as they can be. Together we can make a difference.
